Hii am about to set up a SBS2011 server for a client moving from a SBS2008 server. We are going for a fresh install.I am going to turn the old server into a 2008r2 box as a member of the domainThe client has Sage Line 50 software. Now when this was installed with sbs2008 the instructions were to install the software on the server, then allow it to import and process the data.
Then install the software on the client pc's.This makes no sense, as the server never runs the software as the client pc's run the software and access the shared company.000 folder that is shared.Surely all that is needed is a folder containing all this data to be shared on the network and the client installs to be pointed at the map drive?does the server really need an install of the software on it?does it serve any purpose?What have other people done? There shouldn't be any need for the actual Sage Line 50 program to be installed on the server - I've discussed this with Sage tech support in the past and they advise against installing the program on the server - for various reasons but the obviousones being that you shouldn't run workstation software on a server plus if it crashed etc.When I'm setting Sage up on a network with a server, I simply create a shared folder with full permissions, then install the program on a workstation and point the data folder to the shared folder on the server. Restore the backup and you're done.I don't work for Microsoft - I just use their products. Agree with the above, keep Sage off SBS if you can. Just use SBS to host the Sage company data: create a share - hidden if you prefer - and configure each workstation on which Sage is installed to work with that data - last time I did it, it involved modifyingthe company file(s) in%APPDATA%SageWhatever.
The first time I did, Sage tech support guided me through it - but that assumes your client has Sage phone support which is extra £ I believe.The benefit is that the share can be backed up by SBS, meaning you can restore company files if someone does something silly and the last time they ran their own Sage workstation backup to memory stick was.never. When you mention about appdata etc, I'd just like to confirm.Surely all I need to do is make a shared folder for Sage and put all the data from company.000 in there for the workstations to access?I am glad people have agreed with me that the software doesn;t need to be installed. I did wonder why, especially as the software is never run on the server, and I just wanted to double check there was nothing hidden happening.The only reason I could see to install it on the server would be to use the network install, where as it is only used on 2 workstations which I'd use the CD with anyhowTris.
